According to reports released by authorities on Tuesday 20 January 2015, combined police and military forces have confiscated a shipment of 4,000 sacks of smuggled rice with an estimated P3.2 million market value in Zamboanga Sibugay province. Inspector Dahlan Samuddin, Police Regional Office–Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, said the smuggled rice shipment was intercepted around 11:10 p.m. Sunday at the wharf of Tungawan town, Zamboanga Sibugay. Samuddin said the rice shipment was intercepted while the combined policemen and troops from the Army’s 44th Infantry Battalion were conducting patrol. Samuddin said the confiscated shipment of rice was turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposition. The government authorities are keeping closed watch in other parts of the region following information that rice smugglers are shifting their operations to other areas.
