On 16 December 2013, a group of around ten (10) pirates attacked the 6,500 ton Marshall Islands-flagged MT ALTHEA with 18 crewmembers onboard at around 35 nautical miles off the oil-producing Niger Delta coastline. The pirates kidnapped its Ukrainian captain and a Greek engineer, according to Greek coast guard officials. The ship’s manager, Piraeus-based Medtankers Management, confirmed the attack. “They kidnapped the two men but did not touch the cargo (oil) or injure anyone and fled in a speedboat,” the source said.
