Personnel of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) have assisted 52 people from a motorbanca that capsized in between the Gato Island and the Garrasa Island in Daanbantayan, Cebu. The PCG, however, reported that a woman died as a result of the sea mishap. Three other survivors were injured.

According to reports, the motorbanca left Barangay Poblacion in Daanbantayan and was heading to Carnasa Island. On its way to Gato Island, rough sea conditions damaged the outrigger. The seawater then entered into the motorbanca which caused it to capsize.

The PCG said the motorbanca has no clearance to sail. Other motorbancas travelling that route quickly responded to the incident and helped the 52 passengers and one female senior citizen casualty to the Maya Port.

The joint operatives of the PCG Sub-Station Malapascua and the PCG Sub-Station Daanbantayan proceeded to the incident area as they provided necessary assistance to the survivors.

The injured survivors were taken to the Daanbantayan District Hospital for medical attention, while the 49 other passengers were brought to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO) Evacuation Center.

The PCG reminded boat captains and motorbanca operators to properly comply with the policies and circulars issued by Coast Guard. hey are also encouraged not to travel during unfavorable weather conditions to avoid similar incidents in the future.
