On 24 August (Sunday), the Capitol’s Anti-Illegal Fishing Task Force and the local Bantay Dagat arrested 10 persons—including one minor—who were unloading sacks of a protected shell species in New Port, Barangay Maya in the northern town of Daanbantayan, Cebu. The Task Force seized 39 sacks of Triton’s trumpet shells, which were being transferred from a pump boat to a truck allegedly owned by Enrique Borromeo of Liloan, Cebu. According to Loy Madrigal, Provincial Anti-Illegal Fishing Task Force chief, there were still 12 sacks on the pump boat, reportedly owned by Antonio Batajoy of Esperanza, Masbate, but 27 sacks of the shell were already on the truck. Madrigal placed the value of the shells at around P500,000. PO3 Raymond Sabang Pepito of the Daanbantayan Police Station identified those arrested as Batajoy,40, pumpboat captain; truck driver Celestino Querubin Jr. from Kawit, Medellin; and boat crew Daniel Sacayan, 28; Leny Cailan, 20; a 16-year old minor; Alteo Rodrigo Sr., 42; his son Rodrigo Jr. 19; Joseph Ornopia, 24; Edgar Sacayan, 21 and Esco Rosauro, 29. The crew of the pump boat are all from Esperanza, Masbate. Madrigal said the shells came from Masbate and were supposed to be brought to Metro Cebu.
