Five fishermen from Barangay Bagongon were charged with hefty fines after catching undersized blue crabs in Concepcion town, Iloilo. Subsequent to their arrest on July 28, Cezar Carato, Joesan Genete, Solano Caratao, Jhongill Lisna and Rosito Carato were made to pay a total of P10,000 fine. According to SPO1 Gilbert Piedad of Iloilo Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force, the five have in their possessions blue crabs with carapace measuring 2.5 to 3.0 inches. Fishermen in the province were only allowed to gather and sell blue crabs with carapace measuring more than 4.6 inches pursuant to Provincial Ordinance No. 2012-093. Under the law, fishermen are also prohibited from catching gravid blue crabs and using gill net that has a twines size below 0.3 millimeter and has four knots. The passage of the law prohibiting the catching of gravid and undersized blue crabs in 2012 was in response to declining crab harvest in the province.
