Fishery authorities announced on 05 June 2016 that it will go full blast in implementing a law against all illegal and unregulated fishing activities in Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan (MIMAROPA or Region 4-B) beginning July 1, when the Duterte administration takes over. Lawyer Benjamin S. Tabios Jr., officer-in-charge of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)-MIMAROPA, said the campaign is mandated by the Philippine Fisheries Code with the aim of conserving and protecting the country’s fishery resources and eventually curbing the proliferation of illegal fishing. Tabios said he has instructed their law enforcement division to make an assessment of the over-all situation in the region including the areas belonging to the hotly-contested West Philippine Sea in western Palawan and proceed with their action plans come July 1.
