On or about 07 March 16, the Philippine Coast Guard rescued 81 passengers and crew of a ferry that caught fire after leaving Siquijor Island. A News TV Live report said that according to the PCG, the possible cause of the blaze was a spark on the engine of M/V Jaylann II of the JL Shipping Lines. The ship, bound for Dumaguete City in Negros Occidental, caught fire moments after leaving the dock of Siquijor. Passengers of the ship said they almost jumped from the vessel out of panic until another ship, M/V Maria Josefa 2 arrived and rescued them. The ill-fated vessel arrived at the Dumaguete City port at past 8 p.m. The PCG has recommended the suspension of the ship’s operation pending their investigation.
