ILOILO CITY , Philippines — Two siblings and their neighbor drowned as they were swimming in a river in Dumarao, Capiz yesterday morning.

Princess Hannah Maravilla, 9; her brother John Marco, 5, and their neighbor Maria Luz Gonzaga, 31, all of Barangay Lawaan, were swimming in nearby Badbaran River when they drowned at around 9 a.m.

Hannah and Maria Luz were recovered shortly after the incident. They were rushed to the Dumarao Medicare Hospital, where they died while being treated.

John Marco’s body was recovered at around 1:30 p.m. He was declared dead on arrival at the same hospital, according to town police chief Police Officer 3 Jason Arcangeles.
Probers said Maria Luz took her three-year-old son and the Maravilla children to play in the river, which was located near their homes.

Hannah and John Marco’s mother, Marivic, reportedly allowed her children to go with Maria Luz and her son.
Barely an hour later, Marivic heard someone shouting for help.

She rushed to the area and saw her daughter and Maria Luz unconscious on the riverbank, surrounded by their neighbors.
An irrigation pump operator saw the victims drowning and rushed to rescue them.
Maria Luz’s son was not harmed as he did not take a dip in the river.

On Saturday, five teenage boys also died in another drowning incident in Dumangas, Iloilo.
