Six fishermen, including two minors, were arrested for using dynamites in catching fish 2.2 kilometers off the coast of Colebra Island in Barangay Talotoan, Concepcion town, Iloilo over the weekend (19 October). The suspects were Felix Villar Sr., Marjun Mahusay, Redan and Rex Villar. The names of the minors involved, on the other hand, were withheld by SPO1 Gilbert Piedad, operation’s chief of the Iloilo Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force. The fishermen were apprehended while on board motorboat Immanuel, a fishing vessel donated by a non-profit international non-governmental organization to help them recover from the devastation brought by super typhoon “Yolanda” (international name: Haiyan). Provincial Administrator Raul Banias, in-charge of the task force and former town mayor of Concepcion, expressed his dismay. A criminal case for violation of Section 8 Paragraph 3 of Republic Act 8550 (dealing in and possession of illegally caught fish) has been filed against the fishermen at the Iloilo Provincial Prosecutor’s Office. The task force recovered from their possession two tubs of dynamited fish, two improvised flippers, one air compressor, two rolls of air compressor hose, and diving goggles. Also, their motorized pump boat and two non-motorized bancas (wooden hull) were in the custody of the task force for safekeeping.
