On or about 04 March 16, police arrested 12 fishermen who were caught allegedly illegally fishing in Gato Islet in Daanbantayan. Arrested were boat captain Alfredo Consas, 54; and crew members Raul Alesna, 37; Jerry Boy Monato, 26; Archie Diola, 21; Manny Batinacila, 23; Arthur Reyes, 25; Junard Opteria, 20; Junrey Negapatan, 21; Divison Illustrisimo, 44; Cedric Acucena, 22; Allan Sollano, 36; and Roy Noynay, 52. They are residents of Barangay Mahawak of the nearby town Medellin. Their motorboat named Jordan, owned by one Jordan Villacampa, was confiscated. Operatives of Daanbantayan police supervised by Senior Inspector Roger Quijano conducted seaborne patrol in the seawaters off Daanbantayan town on Friday dawn. When they reached Gato Islet, they noticed a motor banca using superlights so they approached and asked the boat captain why they were fishing in the area. Gato Islet is classified as a Marine Protected Area, and fishing in its vicinity is considered prohibited, said Police Officer 3 Ressan Moralde. Moralde said the fishermen violated a municipal ordinance prohibiting non-residents to fish in the seawaters of the town. On top of this, they were using the bright lamps to attract fishes and fine nets, which are prohibited. Aside from the boat, the fishing gear and 40 boxes of sardines caught by the fishermen were brought to the shore. The fish were worth P35,000. Moralde said the fishermen were however released after paying the corresponding fine.
