A cargo vessel caught fire and sank off Caballo Island at the mouth of Manila Bay between Corregidor Island and Cavite early Tuesday, January 17, the Philippine Coast Guard reported. One crew member of the ill-fated M/V Virginia 1 was rescued while 10 others are now the subject of a search and rescue operation. Angelo Gamble, the quartermaster of the ship, was rescued by two fishermen in the vicinity of Bogiw Island near Barangay Papaya in Nasugbu, Batangas hours after the ship sank. Gamble, 39, of Isla Verde, Batangas, was brought to Apacible Memorial District Hospital for medical checkup. M/V Virginia 1 departed Delpan in Binondo, Manila at about 7:00 p.m. of Monday en route to Roxas, Palawan. Commander Armand Balilo, Coast Guard spokesman, said the vessel’s engine room caught fire while sailing at 1.5 nautical miles southwest of Corregidor Island at 1:20 a.m. and sank minutes later. The Coast Guard has alerted all vessels passing in the area to be on the lookout of survivors.
